"Sapo Cururu ' is a traditional Brazilian folk song. We still lull our children, singing this song or we sing "Sapo Cururu " in kindergartens with our students. Cururu ( Kururu) is an indiginous word. It belongs to Tupi-Guarani which was the language spoken by our indigenous people here during and even after our colonization by Portugal and it means " toad". In the 18th century, the Marquis of Pombal banned the use of indigenous languages in Brazil (through the laws of 1758/1759), mandating the exclusive use of Portuguese and causing Old Tupi to fall into disuse because our people still spoke Tupi-Guarani,, not Portuguese. However, Tupi-Guarani left a profound mark on Brazilian Portuguese, especially in the names of cities, rivers, plants, and animals (such as Ipanema, remember the song?)
